National Treasure · 신라 진흥왕 22년( 562) · Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do
This monument was erected in 561 to commemorate the territorial expansion of the Silla kingdom (57 BCE-935 CE) by King Jinheung (r. 540-576). In 555, King Jinheung successfully incorporated the Changnyeong area, which had been a part of the Gaya confederacy, into Silla.
This monument was discovered in 1914 on the western slope of Mongmasanseong Fortress. It was relocated to the current location in 1924.
The monument is made of a dense granite, and its height ranges from 1.15-3 m. The inscription on the front side is illegible due to wear. However, the inscription on the back remains intact. Among the total 643 classical Chinese characters, 400 have been deciphered so far.
Because the inscription includes the names of the six ministries of Silla, and the names of official posts in the central, as well as local, governments, this monument is a valuable resource in the study of the political, social, and military spheres of 6th-century Silla.
