Treasure · 조선 성종 10년(1479) · Dalseong-gun, Daegu
This house was first built in 1479 by Bak Il-san (1456-?) as the detached quarters of the head house of the Suncheon Bak clan. A head house is a residence passed down among the male successors of a family lineage. It is located in the innermost place of Myogol Village, which is a clan village of the Suncheon Bak clan.
Bak Il-san was a grandson of Bak Paeng-nyeon (1417-1456), who remained loyal to King Danjong (r. 1452-1455) when his throne was usurped in 1455 by his uncle, King Sejo (1455-1468). Bak Paeng-nyeon and a group of civil officials conspired against King Sejo to restore King Danjong to the throne, but this conspiracy was revealed, and King Sejo severely tortured and executed them. Following this, the descendants of Bak Paeng-nyeon lived in this village.
The original house burnt down during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598 but was rebuilt in 1614 by Bak Jong-nam, a descendant of the family. The current building consists of a wooden-floored hall on the right and underfloor-heated rooms on the left. The left side of the building has an extended roof to accommodate a kitchen, which is uncommon in a house such as this.
