Treasure · 조선시대 초기 · Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do
This stupa honors Jicheon (1324-1395), an eminent Buddhist monk of the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392). After a monk’s death, a stupa containing his remains was erected along with a stele recording his life and achievements. The stele of Monk Jicheon is located about 80 m down the hill from here.
Jicheon became a monk in 1332 and studied in Yuan China from 1353 to 1356. After returning to Goryeo, he lived in seclusion and dedicated himself to practicing asceticism. In 1378, he moved a set of Buddhist canons from Gyeongcheonsa Temple in Gaepung (today’s North Korea) and built a depository for preserving it in Yongmunsa Temple.
This octagonal stupa is composed of a base, body, and roof stone. On one side, there is an engraving of a door to indicate that it contains the monk’s remains.
