Treasure · Joseon period · Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi-do
Yeonmugwan Pavilion was established in 1625 as a martial arts training facility for soldiers stationed at Namhansanseong. It served as the main building of the Office of the Defense Commander and underwent a large-scale renovation in 1702. During the reign of King Jeongjo (r. 1776-1800) of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), the pavilion hosted special state examinations, weaponry demonstrations, and military training events. King Gojong (r. 1863-1907) is also known to have held night military training here. According to maps compiled in the 17th-19th centuries, there were several other buildings in the pavilion's vicinity that no longer remain.
Yeonmugwan was designated as a Gyeonggi-do Tangible Cultural Heritage in 1972 and was elevated to a Treasure in 2021. When Namhansanseong was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014, its various structures were classified as part of its military, governing, or folk landscapes. Yeonmugwan Pavilion was recognized as an integral component of the military landscape.
