Treasure · 9세기중반 · Inje-gun, Gangwon-do
Kangwon National University staff discovered the site of Hangyesa Temple in Sept. 1985, and this pagoda was restored to the location from the yard of a Dongbu hillside cottage. The pagoda is made of granite and shows a good example of pagodas built during the Unified Silla period.
It is presumed to have been built between the end of the 8th century and beginning of the 9th century. The three stories have been constructed on a double base platform. Corner and prop pillars have been carved into the upper and lower prop stones the platform. The body and the roof of the pagoda are made of separate stones, and the corner pillars on each side of the body stone are decorated with engravings. The body stones of the second and third story are almost the same width as the roof stone, which gives the pagoda a feeling of stability. The props of the roof have four steps, and the eaves are gracefully uplifted. At the ends of the eaves holes can be found where small brass bells were hung.
