Treasure · Goryeo period · Cheongju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do
Standing some 5.65m tall, the Five-story Stone pagoda in Gyesan-ri, which is said to have been built during the Goryeo Period, is the tallest stone pagoda in Cheongju. As the only stone pagoda left at the site of a temple in this area, it has been preserved in good condition except for the stupa finial, which would have made the temple over 8m tall in its original form.
The stones of each tier lack the columnar patterns commonly found on other stone pagodas. The first and third tiers are composed of four stones, whereas the second, fourth, and fifth are composed of a single stone. The top of each roof stone gives an impression of heaviness. It is presumed that this pagoda was built during the mid-Goryeo Period, I.e. sometime between the 11th and 12th century, as it displays the typical overall structure of the late Silla Period combined with the platform of pagodas of the Baekje Period.
