Treasure · 조선시대 중기 · Boeun-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do
This building, the main prayer hall of Beopjusa Temple, was first built in 553 by Priest Uisin when Silla was under the reign of King Jinheung and then rebuilt in 776 by Dharma Master Jinpyo. This building burnt down during the Imjin Waeran, the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, and restored in 1624 by Great Priest Byeogam. The hall, having a floor space of 402.80m2 and the ceiling rising to 19m above it, is now regarded as one of the three finest Buddhist prayer halls in Korea, the other two being Geungnakjeon Hall of Muryangsa Temple and the Gakhwangjeon Hall of Hwaeomsa Temple, and its architectural style is often compared with that of Mireukjeon Hall of Geumsansa Temple. The hall enshrines the seated Vairocana triad (Treasure) which is known to be the largest clay statue remaining today, 5.5m in height and 3.9m in waist circumference.
