A pagoda is a symbolic monument enshrining the relics or remains of the Buddha. In many cases, a pagoda does not contain the actual remains, but is still regarded as a sacred place enshrining the Buddha.
This pagoda is presumed to have been built during the early period of the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392). It is composed of a two-tiered base, three sets of body and roof stones, and a decorative top. The decorative top is fully preserved, which is quite rare for stone pagodas.
In 1981, when the pagoda was dismantled for renovation, pieces of a reliquary and 108 miniature clay pagodas were discovered inside. They are now kept at the Cheongju National Museum.
