A pagoda is a symbolic monument enshrining the relics or remains of the Buddha. In many cases, a pagoda does not contain the actual remains, but is still regarded as a sacred place enshrining the Buddha.
This three-story stone pagoda is presumed to have been made during the late period of the Goryeo dynasty(918-1392). It was found collapsed at the current location in 1956 and was reassembled by the locals the following year. The same year, a Buddhist temple named Boansa was established on this site, and the pagoda was named after the temple. The temple moved to another location in 1997, but the pagoda remains at its original location.
On the first-story body stone, there is a rectangular niche made to enshrine a buddha statue, which is rare for stone pagodas found in the Chungcheongbuk-do area.
