This is a statue of Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of Great Compassion. It is believed that Avalokitesvara listens to the pain of all living beings and provides them with salvation from suffering.
The statue was made in 1655 by cutting the shape out of lumber and then gilding the statue. The bodhisattva wears a splendid jeweled headdress with a small depiction of the Buddha carved in the middle. The even, rectangular face, small eyes, and short, flat nose are characteristics of Buddhist statues made in this period.
