Treasure · 조선시대(중종9년(1514)) · Boeun-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do
Built to enshrine the relics of Priest Hakjo, this stone monument stands side by side with the stupa of his tutor Priest Suam in the precincts of Beopjusa Temple. The stupa is 2.96m tall and features the style of Goryeo stupas although the main part is spherical. The base as well as the three, upper, milled and lower, pedestals are octagonal and the roofstone is decorated with an elaborately carved finial. An inscription on the two sides of the middle pedestal reveals that the monument was built in 1514 when Joseon was under the rule of King Jungjong.
According to records, Priest Hakjo, also called Hwangaksanin, renovated Haeinsa Temple under an order from Queen Dowager Insu in 1488, and published three copies of the Tripitaka Koreana stored in the temple in 1500 according to an order from Royal Lady Sin, King Yeongsangun’s consort.
