Treasure · 조선 성종 15년(1484) · Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do
This is the main worship hall of Gaesimsa Temple, which was founded in the 7th century. Although Daeungjeon Halls usually enshrine a statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, this hall holds a statue of Amitabha Buddha (Treasure No. 1619), which is flanked by two attendant bodhisattvas, namely, Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva of Great Compassion) and Ksitigarbha (Bodhisattva of Great Vows).
The name Daeungjeon means “hall of the great hero.” However, the plaque above the main entrance reads Daeungbojeon, which is an honorific way of referring to a worship hall of this kind.
The original hall burnt down in 1475. The current building was constructed in 1484 and has since undergone several repairs. Just below the roof are many intricate brackets which support the weight of the roof.
