Treasure · Goryeo period · Cheonan-si, Chungcheongnam-do
This image of a standing buddha carved onto the face of a large cliff on Taehaksan Mountain is presumed to date to the Goryeo period 918-1392). The carving is thought to be possibly related to a Buddhist temple site located in the vicinity.
The buddha's closely set facial features, gentle smile, and narrowed eyes make him appear to be in deep meditation. His robes are depicted in relief in a relatively formulaic manner, with vertical folds hanging down from both shoulders and U-shaped folds hanging aroud the torso and lower body.
