Treasure · Unified Silla period · Sejong
This Buddhist stele consists of a pedestal with lotus petal designs and a body stone with carvings of buddhas, bodhisattvas, arhats, and guardian deities. It is presumed that it originally also had a roof-shaped capstone.
It is presumed to have been made in the late 7th century during the Unified Silla period (668-935). It was found in 1961 together with another Buddhist stele (Treasure) at Saengcheonsa Temple Site near Yeonhwasa Temple.
The overall shape of the stele resembles a large lotus petal. The front side of the stele features seven figures, with Amitabha (Buddha of the Western Paradise) seated on a lotus pedestal at the center and a pair each of arhats, bodhisattvas, and guardian deities. The sides and the back also each feature a depiction of a buddha.
The stele, including its pedestal, measures 51 cm in height, 33 cm in width at the base, and 10 cm in depth.
