The Documents of the Seongju Do Clan include four royal edicts of appointment to an official post and one stipend certificate granted to Do Eung between 1392 and 1397 by King Taejo (r. 1392-1398), the founder of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910).
Do Eung was a civil official of the late period of the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392). Following the establishment of Joseon, King Taejo offered Do Eung an official rank multiple times, but Do Eung refused every time and stayed loyal to the Goryeo dynasty. Appointment documents contain titles of official posts used in the Goryeo and Joseon periods, and display the royal seal.
These types of historical documents provide information on the bureaucratic system and structure of official documents in the early Joseon period, as well as the changes in the design of the royal seal.
