Yeongsanjeon Hall is the oldest surviving building among all the structures at Magoksa Temple. The temple was burnt down during the Japanese Invasion in 1592, but a Buddhist monk named Gaksun rebuilt it in 1651(the 2nd year of King Hyojong’s reign). It is said that the characters on the wooden board were written by King Sejo when he visited the site. Currently, this hall is also known as Cheonbuljeon, which literally means ‘Hall of a thousand Buddhas’, because it houses seven Buddha statues and nearly 1,000 small Buddha statues as well.
