Treasure · Joseon period · Nonsan-si, Chungcheongnam-do
This building is a lecture hall of Donamseowon Confucian Academy. It is presumed to have been built in 1633. In the guide book to Zhu Xi's Family Rituals (Jiali), written by Kim Jang-saeng, Kim mentions what an ideal building to hold rituals should look like. After Kim's death, his students built this lecture hall according to the layout given in the book.
The building features gables at each end of the roof with two canopies below them. The function of the canopies is to protect from rain and wind the parts of the building which are not covered by the gable roof and to provide additional structural reinforcement.
When the academy was moved here in 1880, this building was left at the original location. It was only relocated here much later in 1971.
