Treasure · Joseon period · Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do
Placenta Chamber and Gravestone Seosan of King Myeongjong are a Placenta Chamber where placenta of Myeongjung (the period of reign:1545~1567) is enshrined and a gravestone to commemorate it. It is called as Mt. Taebong (胎封山) because Placenta (Tae) is enshrined (Bong) here.
King Myeongjong is the second son of Jungjong and younger brother of Injong. Injong succeeded to Jungjong when Jungjong died but he died 8 months after enthronement. When Injong died, King Myonegjong, who was 12 years old then, succeeded to his brother. As he was too young to govern the country himself Queen Munjeong conducted state affairs as a deputy.
Placenta Chamber was built in 1536 (the 33rd year of King Jungjong's sovereignty) and the gravestone of placenta chamber was built in 1546 (the first year of King Myeongjong's sovereignty). In 1711 (the 37th year of King Sukjong's sovereignty) the gravestone was re-erected. The current Placenta Chamber was restored in 1975.
