Treasure · Unified Silla period · Namwon-si, Jeollabuk-do
This monument and stupa were erected to the memory of the monk Jeunggak. “Jeunggak” is a pseudonym given to the monk Hongcheok after he passed away and also called "Namhan". Hongcheok, a famous Buddhist monk during the Tongil-Silla period, first built Silsang temple here. Unfortunately, the body of the monument is missing with only the head and the cornerstone remaining. Unlike the general trend of changing to the head of dragon, the head of a turtle is still carved on the cornerstone. In general, the decoration of the monument is not exaggerated and is expressed realistically. It indicates a typical classical type of monument in Korea.
