Treasure · Goryeo period · Gimje-si, Jeollabuk-do
Stone lanterns are placed in Buddhist temples to be used for light offerings to the Buddha. They are typically placed in front of the main worship hall or a pagoda.
This stone lantern is presumed to have been built in the early period of the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392). It was originally placed in front of Mireukjeon Hall but was moved to the current location in 1922.
The lantern is composed of a round base engraved with lotus designs, an octagonal pillar, a light chamber with four openings, an octagonal roof stone with flower-shaped decorations at the corners, and a decorative top shaped like a lotus bud. Apart from some minor damage, the lantern has maintained its original structure.
