Hanging banner paintings were displayed outdoors on special occasions such as the Buddha’s birthday, outdoor rites, and the funerals of eminent monks. This painting, painted in 1700, depicts the scene of the Buddha’s lecture at Vulture Peak. In this painting, Sakyamuni is portrayed in the center, with Samantabhadra and Manjusri (Bodhisattva of Wisdom and Insight) illustrated on his left and right side, respectively. The other four standing in the back, from the left, are Mahasthamaprapta(Bodhisattva of Wisdom and Strength),and Amitabha (Buddha of the Western Paradise), Prabhutaratna (Buddha of Abundant Treasure), and Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva of Great Compassion). The name of each buddha and bodhisattva is written in the red rectangle in the halo encircling their heads, which is a rare case in this kind of Buddhist painting.
