Hanpungnu Pavilion was a part of the local government office complex during the Joseon period (1392-1910). It is unknown exactly when the pavilion was first estab-lished, but accounts of the pavilion in poems written by visiting civil officials suggest that it dates to at least the 15th century.
The pavilion was originally located at the site of what is now the Muju Post Office, It was burned down during the Japanese invasion of 1592 and rebuilt in 1599. During the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945), the pavilion served as a workshop of Muju Public Primary School and as a Buddhist dharma propagation center, until it was pur-chased by a Japanese man. It was then sold in 1936 to another individual who moved the pavilion to the bank of Geumgang River in Yeongdong-gun County, Chungc-heongbuk-do Province and renamed it Geumhoru Pavilion. In 1960, the Hanpungnu Pavilion Restoration Committee was formed and by November 1971, the pavilion had returned to Muju.
Over the centuries, many renowned scholars, poets, and artists created their works in this pavilion.
