Treasure · Unified Silla period · Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do
A pagoda is a symbolic monument enshrining the relics or remains of the Buddha. Although not all pagodas contain the true remains, they are nonetheless worshiped as sacred places that enshrine the Buddha.
This three-story stone pagoda is presumed to have been built in the late period of Unified Silla (668-935).
It is composed of a three-tiered base, three sets of body and roof stones, and part of a decorative top. The base is carved on the corners and sides to look like pillars. The underside of the roof sections are carved into four tiers.
Part of the third story roof stone had broken off and fallen to the ground. So, in 1967, the entire pagoda was disassembled and repaired. At this time, a gilt-bronze standing buddha statue was discovered inside the base.
