Daeungjeon is a Buddhist worship hall enshrining a statue of Sakyamuni, the historical Buddha who lived in ancient India. This hall is also the main hall of Heungguksa Temple.
Daeungjeon Hall of Heungguksa Temple was built in 1624 during a large-scale reconstruction of Heungguksa Temple. In 1690, the building was expanded. In 2017, it was dismantled to be renovated.
The building’s stone foundation features carvings of turtles and blue crabs, while the central stairs and the hanging banner supports in front feature carvings of dragons. These designs are a distinct feature of the temples situated on the seaside. Inside the hall, the ceiling is colorfully adorned with various decorations such as dragons, lotus flowers and phoenixes. Enshrined on the main altar is a Buddha triad (Treasure) consisting of Sakyamuni at the center with Dipankara (Buddha of the Past) and Maitreya (Buddha of the Future) to each side. Behind the triad is a hanging scroll (Treasure) depicting Sakyamuni delivering a Buddhist sermon and on the back wall there is a mural painting (Treasure) depicting Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva of Great Compassion).
