Treasure · Goryeo period · Naju-si, Jeollanam-do
This Buddha statue is 5.38m high. The shape of its left hand shows Abhaya mudra which is made with the hand raised to shoulder height, and the palm of the open hand facing outward as if it were making offering. The mudra of its right hand is Varada mudra which is made with the hand with its fingers spread out naturally hanging downward and the palm of the open hand facing forward. Those mudras symbolize the divine manifestations of Buddha's granting all sentient beings' wishes. It has been said that this Buddha statue stands on the double pedestal, but it cannot be confirmed because it is buried up to its ankle.
This Buddha statue shows several characteristics of the early Goryeo Dyansty such as a plump face an unbalanced body, and streotyped clothes patterns. This Buddha statue is estimated to have been built around the late 10th century.
