A pagoda is a symbolic monument enshrining the relics or remains of the Buddha. Although not all pagodas contain the true remains, they are nonetheless worshiped as sacred places that enshrine the Buddha.
This stone pagoda is presumed to have been built during the Goryeo period (918-1392). It is said that there used to be a Buddhist temple at this site, but only this pagoda remains. In 2011, the pagoda was dismantled and renovated.
It consists of a base, five sets of body and roof stones, and a round decorative top.
The pagoda features an unusually tall body stone at the first level. This is a characteristic of pagodas from the earlier Baekje period (18 BCE-660 CE), and this particular case shows that this style spread to the southernmost end of the Korean Peninsula.
