Three-story Stone Pagoda in Geumgoksa (Temple) is a relatively large structure over 5m high. In terms of the style, it retains the conventional stone pagoda style of the Silla period and shows the features of a stone pagoda of the Baekje period on the platform structure and part of the roof stone. This stone pagoda is estimated to have been built in the early Goryeo period.
This pagoda has a one-story platform and three-story body. The structural stability of the entire body was assured by making the height of the first story (body) about three times that of the second story. The thick roof stone has a steep slope and is supported by the six-story platform.
A small square niche on four sides on the first story particularly draws attention. According to legend, each niche enshrined a small Buddha statue but no Buddha statues are found there now. Thirty-two Jinsinsari (sarira) were found in the Sarigong (sarira reliquary) on the front side of the third story during the stone pagoda disassembly and restoration in 1988.
