Treasure · Goryeo period · Hwasun-gun, Jeollanam-do
It is often said that this temple was erected by Yu Ma-un from Dang Dynasty, China. There is also a saying that Rev. Doseon, a great monk in the late Unified Silla era, set up the temple, naming it Haeryeon Temple. The present buildings were rebuilt as they were destroyed by fire in the Korean War.
The Budo is a sort of tomb for the ashes of a dead monk and also an object of religious worship. This Budo, a typical octagonal structure built on a foundation of the same shape, is composed of a foundation stone, a body stone and the roof stone. It was located in the western corner of the entrance to the temple, and moved to the present location in 1981. According to its patterns, structure and sculpture motif, this Budo, which preserves the ashes of Rev. Haeryeon, is believed to have been established in the early Goryeo Dynasty.
