It's only said that Manyonsa Temple was built by Manyonsonsa Monk with no record. But according to Dongsayoljon, this temple was supposed to be built in the middle age of Goguryo Dynasty. Manyonsa, a temple with a old historic background, was one of eight such temples in Korea. That is why this temple was appointed Jabogsa, where monks used to pray for the good fortune of King Royal Family especially in spite of those days for Choson Dynasty to suppress Buddhism. At the time of the Byoungja conflicts military supplies from this temple were helpful in defending from a foreign invader. In 1777 Dasan Jong Yag-yong, 16 years old, whose father was Governor of Hwasunhyon, cultivated the high spirits of the scholars with his elder brother at this temple. And also at the end of Choson Dynasty Lee dong-baek and Lee nal-chi called the best p'ansori singer in Korea usually practised p'ansori here. And Jong gwang-su and Im bang-wul as national singers taught Korean traditional songs at this place. Specifically, Manyonsa Gwaebul was painted by Bihyon Hwagong (a Buddhistic painter) in March, 1783. This Buddhistic picture especially shows a distinguished feature of the latter period of Choson Dynasty owing to the red green color tone of a canvas, Manyonsa Goebul was graded up from a provincial cultural prorerty to a national cultural treasure in 2002.
