The Wooden Seated Sakyamuni Buddha Triad of Seodongsa Temple was made by eight monk sculptors under the supervision of Monk Okbo. The triad consists of Sakyamuni Buddha for Sabha World at the center, Bhaisajyaguru Buddha for the Eastern World, and Amitabha Bodhisattva for the Western World. This type of Buddha Triad was so popular in the late Joseon especially in the 17th Century, along with the other type wherein Vairocana Buddha is positioned at the center. Histori-ans assume that the economic recession caused by national crises at that time -- such as the Japanese Invasions in 1592 and 1597 and the Manchu war of 1636 -- led to the spread of these Buddha Triad types that people could place in one hall.
