This wooden seated Buddhist triad, enshrined in Daeungjeon Hall of Ssanggyesa Temple, consists of Sakyamuni Buddha in the center flanked on each side by an attendant bodhisattva. It was made in 1665 by nine sculptor-monks, including Huijang and Dou, to be enshrined in Ssanggyesa Temple. e three statues are all in good condition. In 2015, relics were discovered inside ne statues, such as a container of votive objects, a written vow, and Buddhist scriptures. The findings included a record of when, by whom, and for which temple the triad was created, making the triad valuable in the study of 17th-century Buddhist sculpture and excavated relics.
These statues are representative of the mid-1660s works of Huijang, a sculptor-monk active in the Jeolla-do region in the 17th century. Unlike the Buddhist statues made by Huijang in earlier periods, the statues feature large heads in comparison to the bodies, wide and high knees, and simple folds of the robes.
