Treasure · Unified Silla period · Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do
This three-story stone pagoda is presumed to have been made in the late period of Unified Silla (668-935).
The base section is made of eight large square-cut stones stacked in two tiers, on top of which a thin, flat slab of stone was laid as a support for the first-story body stone. Pagodas with bases made of square-cut stones can be found only in the Gyeongju area. Both the underside and top of the roof stones are carved into tiers, which is a design intended to resemble pagodas made of brick.
Above the base are three sets of body and roof stones, with each body and roof stone being made of a separate piece of stone. On one side of the first-story body stone, there is a carving of an entrance with wrathful guardians who protect the Buddha and his teachings to each side, which signifies that the remains of the Buddha are enshrined inside the pagoda.
