Treasure · Unified Silla period · Yeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do
The statue was found without the left arm and buried in the ground from the ankles down. It has a round, plump face and an oversized topknot. Overall, the statue looks full of energy. The neck clearly has three horizontal lines, but the ears were damaged. The statue is presumed to have been made in or around the 9th century during the Unified Silla Period (668 – 935), since its body looks rigid and the robe wrinkles are lifeless, though its face looks suave. Those made in the mid-8th century are characterized by a body full of sense of tension and three-dimensional feel, flexible stance, and resilient body.
