Treasure · Goryeo period · Gimcheon-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do
This stone image of a seated bodhisattva enshrined in Yakgwangjeon Hall of Sudoam Hermitage is presumed to date to the early period of the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392). Believed to depict Bhaisajyaguru (the Medicine Buddha), the bodhisattva sits on a square pedestal with a halo behind his body. He wears a cylindrical headdress with no design on his head and holds a wish-fulfilling jewel in his hands, which rest neatly on his lap. Overall, the sculpture measures 1.54 m in height.
According to a local legend, the monk artisan who made this statue had sworn an oath of brotherhood with the artisans who made the stone buddhas at Yaksaam Hermitage in Gumi and Samseongam Hermitage in Gimcheon. It is said that if one of these statues yawns, the other two statues sneeze.
