Treasure · 조선시대 중기 · Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do
Mucheomdang was built in the mid-16th century to hold rituals for the ancestors of the Yeoju Yi Clan. Among the many places in Yangdong Village, the location of this house has been considered one of the most auspicious, along with that of Songcheom Head House.
The house consists of a women’s quarters, men’s quarters, and servants’ quarters. A shrine stands on the high ground behind the house. The men’s quarters was mainly used as a ritual hall, though it was also used for family gatherings or entertaining guests.
The wooden-floored hall of the men’s quarters features two plaques. One plaque is calligraphed with the house’s name “Mucheomdang (無忝堂),” which means “Do not disgrace your ancestors.” The other plaque reads “Jwahae Geumseo (左海琴書),” which means “geomungo and books of Gyeongsang-do,” in honor of the artistic and academic attitude of Gyeongsang-do scholars. This plaque was calligraphed by Heungseon Daewongun (1820-1898), the father of Joseon’s 26th king, Gojong.
