Treasure · Unified Silla period · Yecheon-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do
The statue on the right is of Sakyamuni, the Buddha. It was made in the 9th century.
The right hand of the Buddha reaches down toward the ground, while the left hand rests on his knee, indicating the attainment of spiritual enlightenment. The statue has curly hair and a large protuberance on the top of the head, which is a symbol of the Buddha’s wisdom. The jewel-like spot carved between the Buddha’s eyebrows is a tuft of white hair which symbolizes his mercy shining out to the world. The three creases encircling his neck represent the “three destinies” of afflictions, actions, and suffering.
The Buddha is seated on an octagonal base decorated with lotus designs. The oval-shaped halo is pointed at the top and is decorated with lotus and flame designs.
The entire statue measures 2.17 m in height, while the Buddha and the halo measure 0.935 m and 1.5 m, respectively.
