Treasure · Goryeo period · Yecheon-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do
The statue on the left is of Vairocana, the Cosmic Buddha, who is the personification of the absolute universal truth. It is presumed to have been made during the early period of the Goryeo dynasty.
The hand gesture, in which his right hand clasps his left index finger, is a distinctive feature of Vairocana. The Buddha has a broad square face with his nose and mouth set closely to each other. The large protuberance on the top of his head is a symbol of wisdom. The jewel-like spot carved between the Buddha’s eyebrows is a tuft of white hair which symbolizes his mercy shining out to the world. The Buddha is seated on a square pedestal decorated with lotus designs. There was once a halo behind the Buddha, but it is missing.
The statue measures 1.11 m in height.
