Treasure · Unified Silla period · Yecheon-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do
This stone statue in Dongbon-ri depicts a standing buddha and is presumed to have been made in the late 9th century during the Unified Silla period (668 - 935). When it was found, the knees and feet of the statue were buried underground, but it was excavated and placed fully above ground in 1960. It measures 3.46 m in height. The statue's large square face is expressed with compassionate and gentle facial features, seen in its closed long eyes, wide and short nose, and gently smiling mouth. Its large head and body and the long round folds of the robe over both legs are characteristic of Buddhist statues made during the transitional period between the Unified Silla and Goryeo (918-1392) periods.
