Treasure · Goryeo period · Pohang-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do
This stupa honors State Preceptor Wonjin (1171-1221), an eminent Buddhist monk of the Goryeo period (918-1392). A stupa is a structure containing the remains of an eminent Buddhist monk. Wonjin became a monk of Bongamsa Temple in Mungyeong at the age of 13. He traveled to sacred mountains around the country and devoted himself to ascetic life, which gained him the respect of the royal family. In 1215, following a royal decree, he became the abbot of Bogyeongsa Temple, which he significantly expanded. He was posthumously bestowed the title of state preceptor.
This octagonal stupa is composed of a base, body, and roof stone. The upper part of the stupa is decorated with a design of oblong lotus petals. The body of the stupa resembles a stone pillar, since it is narrow and quite tall. On one side, there is an engraving of a padlock. The eaves of the roof stone curve slightly upward, and their ends are adorned with flower-shaped decorations. The stupa measures 4.5 m in height.
