Treasure · Unified Silla period · Gumi-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do
This buddha statue is presumed to have been made in the mid-9th century during the Unified Silla period (668-935).
The statue is generally in good condition except for some slight damage to its face and the top part of its halo. The right hand of the Buddha reaches down toward the ground, and his left hand rests on his lap, indicating his defeat of worldly desires and his attainment of spiritual enlightenment.
The halo and the pedestal are elaborately decorated. The edge of the halo is carved with flame designs, and there is a buddha triad on the upper part of the halo. On each side of the statue are carvings of two small Buddhas and an incense burner. The middle tier of the pedestal is shaped as an octagonal stone pillar. Each face of the pedestal is carved with a buddha, a celestial maid, or a lotus flower.
