Treasure · Goryeo period · Yeongcheon-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do
This iron statue depicting a seated buddha is presumed to have been made in the early period of the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392).
The statue has curly hair and a large protuberance on the top of the head, which is a symbol of the buddha’s wisdom. The jewel-like spot carved between the eyebrows is a tuft of white hair which symbolizes his mercy shining out to the world. The buddha is depicted with upwardly slanting eyes, a small nose, a prominent philtrum, and a stiff closed mouth, all of which are common features of Goryeo-period Buddhist statues. The body has wide shoulders and well-balanced proportions and is covered with thin robes featuring simple folds.
