Daejeokgwangjeon is a Buddhist worship hall for the veneration of Vairocana, the Cosmic Buddha, who embodies the absolute universal truth. The name Daejeokgwangjeon means “Hall of the Great Tranquil Light,” where Vairocana is believed to reside.
It is unknown when Daejeokgwangjeon Hall of Girimsa Temple was first established. The current building was constructed in 1629 during the Joseon period (1392-1910) and has since undergone several repairs. Inside the hall is a clay seated Vairocana Buddha triad (Treasure), consisting of Vairocana in the center flanked by Bhaisajyaguru (Medicine Buddha) and Amitabha (Buddha of the Western Paradise).
This building is known for the intricacy of its wooden roof brackets and the ornate flower designs of its door lattices. Its original 17th-century design is well preserved, making it a valuable resource in the study of Buddhist architecture.
