Treasure · 통일신라시대 8세기 · Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do
This rock carving, located at the site of Yongjangsa Temple on Namsan Mountain, depicts a seated buddha and is presumed to have been made in 977 orr 1022.
The buddha sits on a lotus pedestal with halos behind his head and body. His hair is curly, and he has a large, flat protuberance on the top of his head which symbolizes his wisdom. His eyes, nose, and mouth are distinct, and he is smiling peacefully. The three creases encircling the neck represent the “three destinies” of afflictions, actions, and suffering. His right hand reaches down toward the ground, and his left hand rests on his lap, indicating his defeat of worldly desires and attainment of spiritual enlightenment. The folds of his robes are concentrated in parallel lines.
