Treasure · Unified Silla period · Seongju-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do
This stone statue depicts Vairocana, the Cosmic Buddha, who is the personification of the absolute universal truth. It is presumed to have been made in the 9th century during the Unified Silla period (668-935). The pavilion housing the statue was constructed in the 1990s.
Vairocana is depicted clasping his left index finger with his right hand, which is his distinguishing hand gesture. He is seated on a three-tier pedestal that features six lions engraved on its cylindrical middle tier. The halo behind the statue represents the auspicious light radiating from the Buddha’s body.
It is presumed that a Buddhist temple once stood nearby, although its name and history remain unknown.
