Treasure · Unified Silla period · Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do
This stone pagoda is located at the former site of Cheollyongsa Temple, which is said to have been founded during the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCE-668 CE) to wish for the prosperity of the Silla kingdom (57 BCE-935 CE). However, with the fall of Silla to the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392), the temple was abandoned and eventually disappeared. However, in 1040, a civil official of Goryeo, named Choe Je-an (?-1046) rebuilt the temple, which stood until the late period of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910).
This pagoda is presumed to have been made when the temple was rebuilt in 1040. It consists of a base, three sets of body and roof stones, and a decorative top. It had been found collapsed on this site and was re-assembled in 1991. At this time, a new decorative top was added as the original had been lost.
