Treasure · 조선시대(중종 37년(1542)) · Yeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do
This lecture hall dates to 1543, when Ju Se-bung relocated the building from a nearby local Confucian school. It is the first building after entering the academy’s main gate, and it is the largest building in the complex, showing the importance placed on education. The building is deeper than it is wide, which is rare in traditional Korean architecture. The front three-fourths of the building consists of a wooden-floored hall where students learned and studied, and the rear fourth of the building consists of underfloor-heated rooms where the teachers sat and gave lecture. This layout allows the teachers to be in the north and rear, a place of higher honor.
There are two name plaques in the building, one of the original name of the academy, Baegundong, and the other of the name after it was royally chartered, Sosuseowon. The latter plaque was personally calligraphed by King Myeongjong (r. 1545-1567) of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910).
