This is a statue of Amitabha, the Buddha of the Western Paradise. It is believed that all beings who call the name of Amitabha while reflecting on his meritorious virtues can be reborn in the Buddhist paradise of the West.
This statue is presumed to have been made in the early 14th century. A mantra, composed in 1301, and a red incense pouch with an inscription were found inside the head of the statue.
There is a wooden attendant bodhisattva wooden statue on each side of Amitabha Buddha. The statue on the left is Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and the statue at the right is Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva. It is presumed that they were made in the late period of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910).
