Treasure · 1709년 · Yecheon-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do
This Buddhist painting was made in 1709 by four monk-painters of the Joseon period (1392-1910), namely Domun, Seoljam, Gyesun, and Haeyeong. It depicts a thousand buddhas which represent all the buddhas who exist in the past, present, and future, and symbolize the foundational belief of Mahayana Buddhism that anyone can become a buddha once they obtain enlightenment. In the painting, there are actually 1,008 buddhas seated with varying hand postures. The top and bottom of the painting depict the Buddhist paradise.
This painting measures 1.68 m in length and 2.34 m in width. It is presumed to be the oldest thousand buddhas painting in Korea.
