Gyeongheungsa Temple in Gyeongsan
Category: Relics / Buddhis Sculpture / Wooden / Buddhist Statue
Quantity : Three statues
This Seated Wooden Sakyamuni Buddha Triad is regarded as valuable material for studying Buddhist statues that were made during the 17th century. A letter of invocation found from the Sakyamuni Buddha and the inscription on its pedestal suggest that this temple was constructed in 1644, and provide information about the manufacturing period and manufacturer of the statue. Also, this Buddhist statue is evidence proving that Cheongheo, a renowned monk-sculptor of the early and mid-17th century, worked near Geumsansa Temple in Jeolla-do. The statue in this temple shows the representative style of Cheongheon, or Cheongheo, during the 1640s, with its solemn and serene atmosphere, excellent body proportion, upright lines, and the expressions of creases on the robe. In addition, as this Buddha triad displays a great degree of completion in terms of sculptural beauty and religious significance, it is an important material for understanding the works of Cheongheo.
