Treasure · Joseon period · Cheongsong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do
Bogwangsa Temple was reportedly built by Grand Master Euisang in 668 CE, the 8th year of Silla's King Munmu's reign. The temple has kept the tomb of the progenitor for Queen Soheon who came from the Cheongsong-based Sim family.
Geungnakjeon Hall was reportedly built together with Manseru Pavilion and Chumojae House in 1429, the 11th year of Joseon's King Sejong's reign. The current building was verified as having been built in 1615, when sangryang mun ('a text marking the completion of the wooden framework of a house') dated Dec. 1, 1615, the 43rd year of the reign of Emperor Wanli of Ming, was discovered during maintenance work.
3 kan ('compartment') wide at the front and 3 kan wide at the side, the building with Dapo-style gambrel roof characteristically has its portion where side gables meet decorated with an arabesque-patterned hyeoneo (literally, "dangling fish" for decoration'), which was rarely found with the Buddhist temple halls from the mid-to-late Joseon period. And it has tall posts inside with its ceiling organized in the shape of 井.
While its size is small, the building excellently preserves the architectural style from the mid-Joseon period.
